I would like to give you some pros and cons when trying to decide whether a baby parrot bird is best or when to take on a rescued parrot.
The many advantages to taking a baby bird is, it will easily bond with you, you will have it for it’s entire lifespan, it has not been taumatized by having more than one home and it is specially rewarding to have your bird right from the begining. Training your bird is much easier when it is a baby and the trust comes very easily. The bond a baby has with you will be the most important one because any attempt at subsequent bonds will only be secondary. A parrot has a better start for health and home when it is a baby. The health has not been jeopardized by unhealthy food or housing and bad eating habits that have most often develop in another home.
A rescued parrot needs you to take into consideration several conditions before taking one on. You will need to consider your living environment as well as if you have children or are working. Do live in a home or apartment? How noisy is the parrot you are considering? Many people do not realize that a parrot moving to another home has special needs. It goes through separation anxiety and depression. It takes special handling to get a parrot through this phase. Even if the parrot comes from one home into a friends who it has been in contact with, will still go through separation anxiety and depression. A parrot bonds with one person and will learn to accept the person’s mate or child sometimes. Because of this the bond that a bird forms when placed into another home is secondary to the origional bond. It will not be as deep as the origional bond. Assuming that you have gotten past the axiety and depression you also inherit the parrot’s good and bad behavior. What may have acceptable in it’s first home may not be acceptable in yours. If you have children or are working then you will not have time to give a rescued parrot what it needs, which is constant supervision and interaction. It takes alot of time to re-train the rescued parrot, along with alot of patience and love. If you are a person who likes a challenge and will not give up, because the bird needs stability and you don’t want to further damage the bird, then you are the right one to take it on.
If you are looking for a baby then I would reccommend that you find a good breeder and check them out before buying from them. If you feel you can give a parrot everything it needs to adjust to a new home then please find a bird that will fit into your home. It’s personality is important as well as the aggressiveness of the parrot. Check out all avenues to find the right parrot and check them out.
This is a life long committment(the life of the parrot) and should not be taken lightly whether it is a baby parrot or a rescued bird. This is much more than raising a child they only take 19-20 years a parrot is much longer and this consideration is a must. Remember to include your parrot in your will as it will likely out live you.
